(Below is a guest blog post from Carol Levesque, the host of our Step Ahead podcast for runners.)
Having been injured for the past four months, and due to Chris' upcoming April travel plans, we will be releasing episodes of Step Ahead every other week for the next couple of months. Once I am able to run again, we will return to a weekly release schedule.
Here's a recap of my injury. In November, I experienced what I thought was Achilles tendonitis, as well as paraesthesia (commonly known as pins and needles) in my ankles. I saw a physiotherapist and went to a Pedorthist to get orthotics. I was running again within three weeks. However, two weeks later, I started experiencing paraesthesia again; so much so that it became painful. I ended up going to the hospital; I was experiencing stroke-like symptoms (later diagnosed as false). I saw a neurologist who didn't think I had a problem, but he an MRI for me anyway. My family doctor told me to stop running for four weeks and she gave me some Celebrex (which had no effect).
I cycled and swam for four weeks, but did no running; still experiencing paraesthesia in my ankles. I even stopped exercising completely for three weeks; the paraesthesia continued. My MRI showed a bulged disc, but no nerve impingement. My physiotherapist was stumped and decided to run further tests on me. I eventually tested positive for a Babinski's reflex on my left foot and revealed a hyper-flexive deep tendon reflex on my biceps and knees. This was enough to trigger a call from my doctor for another appointment. She referred me to a physiatrist who scheduled me for an electromyograph (EMG) next month. I'm hoping to get to the bottom of this soon and be back to running by late Spring or Summer.
